Can you eat happiness?
In this case, the answer is yes. This apple dessert recipe is so ridiculously good, I would be lying if I said we didn’t finish the whole pan the first night! I bought a few apples when Greg’s mom came into town expecting to make some kind of yummy cobbler one night for dessert. Last night, I decided to get to it. And even though I didn’t start making this dessert until about 9:00 pm, we got to indulge late-night — and you just need a warm, late-night apple-y dessert every now and then!
I took the quick and easy route by not peeling the apples, but I really don’t think it’s necessary when they are sliced so thinly. I used 4 Jazz apples, which are similar to Gala apples. I believe any sweet apple will work. All you do is mix up your sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and softened butter until crumbly. I use a stand mixer, but a blender, or a good ol’ whisk should work… its just a bit more work! Slice your apples thinly and, starting with a bit of the flour mixture, layer from the bottom up. Sugar-butter mix, apple layer, sugar-butter mix, apple layer, etc… Make sure to END (top) with about 3/4 cup of the sugar-butter mixture (for the CRUMBLY topping). Cook in a 350 degrees oven for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
So now you get why it’s crumbly, and you understand the apple part, I’m sure. The happiness — you’ll get that after you put that first bite in your mouth!
While it cooks, the butter and sugars melt and combine to make a caramel-like sauce that forms on the bottom layers. The top stays crumbly and a little crunchy. And the APPLES become soft and surrounded with the warm, sweet cinnamony sauce. I’m sure some chopped almonds or walnuts would be a great addition to the topping. Make sure to wait about ten minutes before serving to make sure it doesn’t fall apart when spooning out servings…. even though it tastes just as delicious. Still, you don’t want to burn your mouth off. We indulged, and literally went back for seconds and thirds until this whole freakin’ pan was gone. GO US!
I apologized for making the most delicious dessert ever, and we sat in disbelief that we finished an entire dish of apple deliciousness. But we were HAPPY. It’s the only dessert we had ALL weekend, and the only thing we complained about tonight was not having any more to eat! Oink.
Make sure to serve with a good scoop of vanilla ice cream. You won’t regret it.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 8x8 or 9x9 inch glass cooking dish.

- Reserve 1/2 to 3/4 cup of the crumbly mix for a topping.
- Start by layering the butter-crumble mix on the bottom and top with a layer of sliced apples. Then alternate layers of the crumb mixture & apples. Make sure to end with your reserved layer of crumb topping.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden on the top. Let sit for 10 minutes or so before serving.
